Have a Blocked Drain?
Blocked drains really stop things up and need to be fixed quickly. It does not matter if you are talking about a bathroom sink drain, a kitchen sink, a shower, a bathtub, a toilet or a floor drain. Any backup will lead to often disgusting smells, inconveniences, and often sanitation hazards.
That makes dealing with these blocks urgent, and why they are considered a plumbing emergency. When you take care of a small problem early, like a slow drain, you can avoid often costly fixes. As soon as you notice the beginning of a block, give the team at Beach Plumbing a call.
What Causes Blocked Drains?
There are many reasons why a drain may become blocked. Often it is not something that just suddenly came up, but is something that developed over time.
Many bathroom drains become blocked by a combination of hair and personal care products. These build up together and eventually create a complete block, similar to pouring concrete down the drain.
Kitchens develop similar blocks, but for different reasons. These blocks form from grease, oils, and food debris. In many cases, these substances simply do not wash down the system entirely. Once they settle in a section of pipe, it dries and slowly closes off the pipe.
Then you have laundry and washing machine drains. These are more complex due to the nature of what is flushed down these drains. This includes chemicals, debris from working outside, and more. If these back up into other areas of the system, it can cause cross-contamination areas like where food is prepared.
Aside from the things that go down the drain, roots can penetrate the pipes and will catch any variety of debris. These are more difficult to find and deal with for untrained people without the right equipment.
Blocked Drain Inspections
Dealing with a blocked drain is not as simple as dumping a chemical cleaner down and waiting for it to work. These chemicals may just make things worse depending on what kind of pipe you have, what is causing the blockage, and its severity.
Forcing a snake down the drain can also cause additional damage if you do not know where the block is and what is causing it. That is why inspecting the drain and clog before beginning invasive and potentially damaging work is important. Licensed and experienced plumbers will use a camera system to inspect the drain to find where the block is and how much of the drain is blocked.
You can do some simple things before calling for a plumber to ensure there is not merely a minor problem. First, clear all of the debris near the top of the drain. Next, use simple, non-damaging tools, like the plastic zip-style cleaner tools, to check for any clogs at the top of the pipe. If these do not work, call in the professionals to assist.
